Noise-induced hearing loss is permanent hearing loss that is caused by being around loud noises over a long period of time. It also can occur after you are exposed to loud noise in a short period of time, such as a gunshot or explosion. The more you are around loud noises, the greater your risk of hearing loss.
As we get older, the tiny hair cells in our ears that help us hear start to break. As the number of functioning hair cells decreases, so does our ability to hear. Unfortunately, you cannot grow any more hair cells, so the damage is permanent. This type of age-related hearing loss is called presbycusis.
There are several types of conductive hearing loss. Some types of conductive hearing loss can be corrected with hearing aid. If the Corti organ in the cochlea functions normally, hearing aids can help transmit sound in the outer or middle ear.
